About Kim Brauer
Kim Brauer is a highly experienced therapist with over 25 years of expertise in counselling, therapy, clinical supervision, training, professional development, practice research, project and program management.
With a warm, grounded, and client-focused approach, Kim combines clinical excellence with a deep commitment to lifelong learning, social justice, and community well-being.
Kim holds a Master of Social Work (Counselling) qualification.
She is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with the capacity to provide Medicare-supported counselling.
Kim has more than two decades of experience across a broad range of settings including: Healthcare (hospital and community health), employment, education, and justice sectors.
Her career began in employment services, supporting clients with complex barriers to employment, before moving into the health sector where she held senior clinical and leadership roles. She has worked extensively in hospitals, universities, and district-level health governance, always with a strong commitment to person-centred, trauma-informed, and evidence-based practice.
Kim is passionate about education and has held roles as a Field Educator, Professional Educator, and Clinical Supervisor.
She currently provides external supervision to students at Western Sydney University and continues to advocate for reflective, ethical, and high-quality social work practice.
In her private practice – Brauer Counselling and Consulting – Kim provides individual therapy, professional supervision, and consulting services.
Kim’s clinical focus includes supporting individuals through adjustment to illness and disability, carer support, treatment and counselling for mental health issues, relationship challenges, and career transitions. Her practice is based on the integration of a range of evidence-based therapeutic modalities including CBT, ACT, and compassion-based and strength-based therapies.

Kim's Career Highlights
Academic services: (2023 – Current): Kim is employed by Western Sydney University as a Casual Academic. She provides individual and group supervision to social work students completing their 1000 hours of field education. Kim supervises BA Social Work and Master of Social Work students qualifying in first and second field education placements.
Manager, Carer Program – Sydney Local Health District (2016–2024): Led district-wide initiatives to support carers, trained healthcare staff, and advocated for carer-inclusive workplaces— resulting in SLHD being the first organisation in Australia to be recognised as a Carer-inclusive Workplace.
Senior Social Worker – Liverpool Hospital (2006–2016): Delivered advanced psychosocial care across oncology and diabetes services. Provided individual and family counselling, facilitated therapeutic groups, and contributed to multidisciplinary teams.
Professional & Student Educator – SWSLHD (2009–2016): Pioneered innovative education programs for social work students and professionals, including training in clinical supervision and advanced care planning.
Social Worker – Employment services (2000–2006): Supported people facing long-term unemployment. Kim supported people experiencing significant life challenges through tailored counselling, skill development and group programs. Challenges related to vocational issues, but also issues around housing and food insecurity, mental and physical health, relationship breakdowns, addictions, and social isolation.
Kim has qualifications across the fields of social work, counselling, training and business administration.
